Buderim Naturals targets bellies, boomers and boaties
With two in three Australian adults using complementary health medicines and an industry now worth around $2 billion, Aussie ginger processor, Buderim Ginger has launched its new Buderim Naturals brand of pharmacy products targeting the preventative and complementary health markets.

Backed by a growing chorus of studies underway around the world into ginger’s bioactive compounds, the Buderim Naturals label was launched to take advantage of the company’s strong brand following to assist its transition into the pharmacy segment.

Expectant mums, baby boomers, back pain sufferers and those prone to motion sickness are in Buderim Naturals’ sights with its new QueaseEase capsules and OsteoSoothe tablets currently being rolled out nationally into pharmacies.

“Birth rates in Australia are on the rise and with it, brings the unpleasant symptoms of morning sickness that is said to affect more than half of all women during their first trimester,” said Buderim Naturals’ General Manager, Paul Ritchie.

“Ginger has been used to treat nausea for centuries and now there is mounting scientific evidence to support the claims,” Mr Ritchie said.

QueaseEase has been specifically developed to assist the symptoms of both morning sickness and travel sickness and combines the clinically proven ingredients of ginger and Vitamin B6 with German chamomile, the latter traditionally used for its calming effects.

Safe to use during pregnancy, QueaseEase can also be used to help alleviate symptoms of motion sickness in adults and children aged over two years.

Buderim Naturals’ second pharmacy line, OsteoSoothe provides temporary relief for lower back pain and also assists in the management and symptomatic relief of osteoarthritis.

“OsteoSoothe contains plant extracts known to favourably interact in the chemical pathways of inflammation associated with arthritis and back pain. The formulation contains Devils Claw root, ginger and Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense),” Mr Ritchie said. “The other ingredient is glucosamine sulfate, well-known and studied for its anti-inflammatory effects, decreasing arthritic joint swelling.

“Inflammation is a familiar accompaniment to many symptoms of joint disease which is commonly referred to as arthritis,” he added.

“With OsteoSoothe, we are not only targeting the rising ageing population but also the millions of Australians that will experience lower back pain at some stage, be they young adults with sporting injuries or those in occupations involving manual or repetitive labour,” Mr Ritchie said.

According to the World Health Organization, lower back pain is the most common spinal problem affecting 80% of people at some point in their lives.

Each OsteoSoothe tablet contains a 3125mg dose of Devil’s Claw root, which has shown strong evidence in trials for its efficacy in the short-term improvement of lower back pain2.

Arthritis is another growing concern in Australia with one in five Australians having some form of arthritis, costing the economy a staggering $23.9 billion3 a year. Do you hold evidence for this claim?

Mr Ritchie said Buderim Naturals would continue to push into the emerging complementary health segment and the company had brought onboard a widely respected nutritional biochemist to develop new product formulations targeting ‘condition specific’ ailments.

“We’ve been operating for 70 years as Buderim Ginger and have built a very loyal brand following among consumers and global food manufacturers.

“By using the Buderim Naturals brand to diversify into the complementary health sector we aim to build on this brand equity and extend our appeal to health conscious consumers seeking the benefits of an integrated approach to healthcare,” Mr Ritchie said.

“We are currently participating in a two-year study with the University of Sydney and are quietly confident that these studies together with a raft of others underway around the world will further validate the importance of plant extracts and the valuable role they play in preventative health.”
